Your story explains where you’ve been.
Your mission explains why you’re here.
Your legacy is what you choose to leave behind.
But what happens when you look at your life and realize that the chapters don’t seem to fit together?
Maybe you’ve changed careers.
Maybe you walked away from something you once thought was your identity.
Maybe you’ve experienced a loss that forced you to reinvent yourself.
Maybe the work you do today looks completely different from where you started.
You may even wonder:
“How do all these pieces of my life fit together?”
I’ve asked myself that question.
And what I’ve discovered is this:
Sometimes the twists and turns of your life aren’t taking you away from your mission. They’re preparing you for it.

I Didn’t Plan the Story I Have Today
My professional journey began in a very different place from where I am today.
I was a federal prosecutor and civil rights coordinator. Law was my career, and I had built a life around that identity.
But I also had another dream.
I wanted to sing and act.
So I made a decision that changed everything: I left law to pursue entertainment full-time.
And I succeeded.
I performed on stage and television, had prominent roles, and sang solo at Carnegie Hall.
Then life handed me a twist I never expected.
I lost my performing voice.
For someone whose identity and dreams were so closely connected to singing and performing, losing my voice wasn’t simply a professional setback.
It forced me to ask:
Who am I when I can no longer do the thing I thought defined me?
I had to rediscover confidence.
I had to rediscover well-being.
And eventually, I had to rediscover myself.
That chapter ultimately led me into health, wellness, fitness, coaching, and the brain-body connection.
I transformed my own health and lost 77 pounds without dieting.
What I initially experienced as a personal transformation became the foundation for helping other people create change in their own lives.
Looking back, I can see something I couldn’t see while I was living it:
My story was building my mission before I even knew what my mission was.
Sometimes Your Life Makes Sense Looking Back
This is something I want every leader, coach, consultant, speaker, and entrepreneur to understand.
You don’t always discover your mission by sitting down and writing a mission statement.
Sometimes you discover it by looking backward.
You look at the career you chose.
The obstacles you encountered.
The things you lost.
The things you rebuilt.
The people you helped.
The lessons you couldn’t stop learning.
And eventually you see a pattern.
For me, the pattern has always been about transformation.
Transformation of the body.
Transformation of the mind.
Transformation of beliefs.
Transformation of identity.
Transformation of possibility.
And today, transformation of purpose into meaningful work.
The New Chapter I’m Living Now
My journey continues to evolve.
Today, my work sits at the intersection of brain, body, beliefs, business, wellness, purpose, and human potential.
And as an Ambassador for PUUR, I’m particularly passionate about the role connection can play in our well-being.
PUUR focuses on human connection and somatic co-regulation through simple, consistent practices designed to support emotional well-being, self-awareness, stability, and feeling your best. (puur.com) (Lisa Charles )
That mission resonates with what my own journey has taught me.
We are not simply brains walking around in bodies.
We are whole human beings.
Our experiences affect our beliefs.
Our beliefs affect our choices.
Our choices affect our bodies and businesses.
And the people we connect with can influence how supported, seen, and capable we feel as we navigate change.
That is why I don’t believe transformation is simply about changing what you do.
It’s about reconnecting with who you are and understanding what you’re here to do.
There is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside you
Lisa Charle – Commit. Do. Live.
Your Story Is the Beginning, Not the End
Your story isn’t meant to keep you looking backward.
It is meant to help you understand what you can create going forward.
Maybe your story includes a career you left.
Maybe it includes a business that failed.
Maybe it includes a season when you had to rebuild your confidence.
Maybe you became a coach because you needed coaching yourself.
Maybe you became a leader because someone once believed in you when you couldn’t believe in yourself.
Maybe your greatest expertise came from solving a problem you once struggled with personally.
Whatever your story contains, ask:
What did that experience teach me?
Then ask:
Who could benefit from what I learned?
That’s where your story begins turning into mission.
Your Mission Gives Your Story Direction
Your story tells people what shaped you.
Your mission tells people what you’re going to do with it.
A mission isn’t simply a sentence on your website.
It’s the change you are committed to creating.
It’s the problem you care enough about to keep solving.
It’s the people you feel called to serve.
It’s the transformation you want to make possible.
My own mission grew out of my experiences.
I didn’t simply want to lose weight.
I wanted to understand what made lasting transformation possible.
I didn’t simply want to recover from losing my voice.
I wanted to rediscover confidence and purpose.
I didn’t simply want to teach fitness.
I wanted people to understand the deeper connection between their brain and body and how that connection influences the way they live.
And now I help leaders and experts discover another powerful connection:
the connection between their story, their mission, and the message they bring into the world.
Your Experiences Can Become Intellectual Property
This is where your story becomes particularly valuable for your business.
Your experiences aren’t automatically intellectual property.
But the lessons, frameworks, insights, beliefs, and methodologies you develop from those experiences can become the foundation of intellectual property.
Your experience can inspire a framework.
Your lesson can become a teaching point.
Your transformation can become a methodology.
Your philosophy can become a keynote.
Your body of knowledge can become a book.
And your mission can become the foundation of a business.
Think about the possibilities:
Experience → Lesson → Framework → Message → Offer → Impact
That is how a personal journey can evolve into a professional platform.
Your Leadership Brand Is Bigger Than Your Logo
When people hear “leadership brand,” they often think about colors, logos, websites, social media, taglines, or professional positioning.
Those things matter.
But they aren’t the foundation.
Your leadership brand is also shaped by what people believe about you.
What do you stand for?
What do you teach?
What transformation do you create?
What do you believe that others need to hear?
What experiences gave you the authority to say it?
And what do you want to be known for?
Your brand becomes stronger when your external message reflects your internal truth.
From Story to Mission
Here’s a simple way to begin.
Look at three moments in your life:
The moment that challenged you.
The moment that changed you.
The moment that clarified you.
For me, those moments have appeared in different forms throughout my journey.
My career in law challenged me to think critically, advocate, and pursue truth.
My entertainment career taught me communication, presence, creativity, and the power of connecting with an audience.
Losing my voice forced me to confront identity, confidence, and reinvention.
My health transformation taught me that change is possible when we work from the inside out.
My wellness career taught me how to help others create that transformation.
And my work today allows me to bring those lessons together in a larger mission.
That’s the power of looking at your life as a connected story rather than a collection of unrelated events.
Your Mission Can Become Your Money
There is another piece of this conversation that purpose-driven leaders sometimes avoid.
You can have a meaningful mission and still build a profitable business.
In fact, sustainability can make your mission more powerful.
When your business generates revenue, you can continue serving people.
You can create programs.
You can write books.
You can speak.
You can build communities.
You can invest in your ideas.
You can reach more people.
The goal isn’t to choose between purpose and profit.
The goal is to build a model where they can support each other.
Your story can differentiate you.
Your expertise can create value.
Your mission can give your work direction.
Your offer can create transformation.
And your business can provide the resources to keep that mission alive.
That’s the philosophy behind Make Your Mission Your Money.
And Then Comes Legacy
Legacy is where the conversation gets bigger.
Because eventually, the question isn’t only:
“What am I building?”
It’s:
“What will remain because I built it?”
Your legacy might be a book.
A keynote.
A business.
A methodology.
A community.
A movement.
A body of research.
A family.
A person whose life changed because you showed up.
A leader you helped become more confident.
A client who finally believed they were capable of more.
Legacy doesn’t have to mean fame.
Legacy means impact that continues beyond the immediate moment.
What Do You Want Your Work to Leave Behind?
Imagine someone talking about your work ten years from now.
What do you want them to say?
“I remember her credentials.”
Maybe.
But what if they said:
“She helped me see myself differently.”
“She gave me the courage to change.”
“She helped me understand what I was here to do.”
“Her message changed the direction of my business.”
“Her book gave me language for something I had been feeling for years.”
Those are legacy statements.
And they begin with the work you choose to do today.
Your Story Doesn’t Have to Be Perfect
One of the biggest misconceptions about personal branding is that you need to have everything figured out before you share your story.
You don’t.
My own story certainly wasn’t a straight line.
Law wasn’t the end.
Entertainment wasn’t the end.
Losing my voice wasn’t the end.
My health transformation wasn’t the end.
Each chapter opened another door.
That’s often how life works.
The thing you thought was an ending may actually be an invitation into your next chapter.
So don’t hide the twists.
Don’t erase the transitions.
Don’t apologize for changing direction.
Don’t assume that every chapter has to look connected while you’re living it.
Sometimes the connection only becomes visible afterward.
Your Story Is Waiting for Its Spine
If you’ve lived through multiple careers, transformations, challenges, successes, and reinventions, you may have more than a story.
You may have the raw material for a leadership message.
The challenge is knowing what belongs in the story.
Which moments matter?
Which lessons should you keep?
What is the deeper belief underneath your experiences?
How do those experiences connect to your mission?
And how can your story become something bigger than a personal narrative?
That’s exactly why I created Story to Spine™.
Story to Spine™ helps coaches, consultants, transformational leaders, and experts uncover the experiences, lessons, beliefs, and turning points within their journey and transform them into the foundation of a Mission-Led Book and Keynote.
You don’t have to start with a blank page.
You start with the life you’ve already lived.
Your story provides the raw material.
Your expertise gives it substance.
Your mission gives it direction.
Your message gives it meaning.
And your legacy gives it a reason to continue.

From Story to Mission to Legacy
Your story is where you’ve been.
Your mission is what you’re here to do with what you’ve learned.
Your business is one vehicle through which that mission can create value.
And your legacy is what continues because you chose to act on it.
Think about the journey:
Your Story → Your Expertise → Your Mission → Your Business → Your Impact → Your Legacy
That’s more than personal branding.
That’s leadership.
And perhaps the most important question isn’t:
“What should I build?”
It’s:
“What is my life uniquely preparing me to build?”
The answer may already be hidden inside your story.
Your Next Chapter Starts With Your Story
You don’t have to know exactly how every chapter connects.
You simply have to be willing to look.
Look at what you’ve experienced.
Look at what you’ve overcome.
Look at what you’ve learned.
Look at the people you’ve helped.
Look at the problems you can’t stop caring about.
Look for the pattern.
Because sometimes your greatest leadership message isn’t something you invent.
It’s something you discover.
And when you discover the connection between your story, your mission, and your legacy, you stop simply building a brand.
You begin building a body of work that means something.
