Every leader has a story.

But not every leader knows how to tell it.

You may have spent years building your expertise, earning credentials, helping clients, growing a business, leading teams, or overcoming challenges that shaped who you are today.

Yet when someone asks, “What makes you different?”, you may find yourself giving the same answer everyone else gives.

You talk about what you do.

You talk about your credentials.

You talk about your services.

You talk about your results.

But you don’t talk about the story that made you the person capable of doing all of those things.

And that could be costing you clients.

Why Your Leadership Story Matters

People don’t simply buy expertise.

They connect with people they trust.

Think about the leaders, coaches, consultants, or speakers you remember most.

You probably don’t remember every credential they’ve earned.

You remember something they said.

A story they shared.

A challenge they overcame.

A moment that changed their perspective.

A belief they refused to abandon.

Their story gave their expertise meaning.

Your leadership story can do the same thing.

Your experiences can help your audience understand why you do what you do, why your work matters, and why they should trust you to help them.

That is especially important in a crowded marketplace where many professionals offer similar services.

Your story can become the bridge between your expertise and your audience.

Your Story Is More Than Your Biography

One of the biggest mistakes leaders make is thinking their story is simply their biography.

It’s not.

Your story isn’t a chronological list of everything that has happened in your life.

It’s not:

“I went to school here. Then I got this degree. Then I worked at this company. Then I started my business.”

That’s information.

A leadership story goes deeper.

It’s about the experiences that shaped your beliefs, your mission, and the way you serve others.

What did you overcome?

What did you learn?

What changed you?

What did you discover about yourself?

What problem became so important to you that you eventually built your work around solving it?

Those moments can become the foundation of a powerful leadership message.

There is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside you.

The Experience You Think Is Irrelevant May Be Your Greatest Asset

Sometimes the most valuable part of your story is the part you don’t think belongs in your business.

Maybe you experienced a major career transition.

Maybe you failed at something important.

Maybe you lost your confidence.

Maybe you had to start over.

Maybe you discovered your purpose later in life.

Maybe you walked away from a career that looked successful from the outside because something inside you was telling you there was more.

Or maybe you experienced a personal transformation that completely changed the way you see success.

Those experiences don’t make you less professional.

They make you human.

And your humanity can make your message more relatable.

Lisa Charles understands this personally.

Her journey included a successful career as a federal prosecutor, a transition into entertainment, performing on stage and television, and eventually a profound personal transformation that led her toward health, wellness, coaching, speaking, and helping others create healthier, more purposeful lives.

Her experiences weren’t disconnected chapters.

They became part of the story behind her mission.

And that’s an important lesson for leaders:

Your past doesn’t have to be separate from your purpose. It can help explain it.

Why Your Story Can Help You Stand Out

There are thousands of coaches.

Thousands of consultants.

Thousands of speakers.

Thousands of business experts.

Many have impressive credentials.

Many have great websites.

Many offer valuable programs.

So why should someone choose you?

Your story can help answer that question.

Not because your story is better than someone else’s.

Because your story is yours.

Your experiences have shaped the way you think.

Your challenges have shaped your perspective.

Your victories have shaped your confidence.

Your failures have shaped your wisdom.

Your transformation has shaped your method.

When you connect those experiences to the work you do today, your audience begins to see more than a service provider.

They see a leader with a reason for being there.

The Problem With Keeping Your Story Hidden

You might be thinking:

“But my clients don’t need to know my whole story.”

You’re right.

They don’t.

Your audience doesn’t need every detail of your personal life.

The goal isn’t to tell everything.

The goal is to tell the right parts of your story for the right purpose.

Your story should help your audience see themselves.

It should help them understand a problem.

It should create an emotional connection.

It should demonstrate your perspective.

And ultimately, it should help them understand why your work matters.

When you hide everything behind credentials and polished marketing language, you may unintentionally sound like everyone else.

Your audience hears:

“I help leaders…”

“I help coaches…”

“I help businesses…”

“I help people achieve…”

But they may not understand why you.

Your story helps answer that question.

Your Story Can Become Your Signature Message

The most powerful leadership stories don’t simply create connection.

They create positioning.

Your story can become the foundation for the ideas you teach, the message you speak from stage, the content you create, and the transformation you offer clients.

Instead of constantly asking:

“What should I post today?”

you can begin asking:

“What lesson from my journey can help my audience move forward?”

That’s a completely different approach to content and thought leadership.

Your story gives you something no competitor can duplicate.

Your experiences become the raw material.

Your lessons become the message.

Your expertise becomes the framework.

And your mission becomes the reason people remember you.

From Life Experience to Leadership Message

But there’s a challenge.

Most people don’t know how to turn their experiences into a clear leadership story.

They either tell too much…

Or too little.

They focus on the events instead of the transformation.

They share what happened but don’t explain why it mattered.

They tell their audience where they’ve been but never connect it to where they’re going.

That’s where having a process can make a difference.

Your story needs structure.

It needs purpose.

It needs a message.

And most importantly, it needs to connect your experiences to the transformation you now help others achieve.

What If Your Story Became Part of Your Business Strategy?

Imagine having a story that clearly communicates:

Who you are.

What you’ve experienced.

What you believe.

Why your work matters.

Who you are here to help.

And the transformation you are uniquely positioned to create.

Now imagine using that story across your:

  • Keynote presentations
  • Website
  • Social media
  • Podcasts
  • Interviews
  • Sales conversations
  • Books
  • Workshops
  • Coaching programs
  • Thought leadership content

Your story stops being something you occasionally tell.

It becomes part of your leadership platform.

The Twists That Changed My Life

My life has been shaped by moments I never expected. I began my professional journey as a state and federal prosecutor, then made the courageous decision to leave law and pursue my passion for singing and acting. I performed jazz, Broadway, and opera, appeared on stage and television, performed Off-Broadway, and even sang at Carnegie Hall. Then another twist came: I experienced a vocal injury that changed the direction of my life. What felt like a loss at the time became an invitation to reinvent myself. I entered the world of fitness and wellness, eventually discovering through my own health transformation that lasting change isn’t simply about what we do with our bodies—it begins with the relationship between our brain, our body, our beliefs, and our choices.

Today, I continue to explore that deeper connection between wellness, purpose, and human potential. As an Ambassador for PUUR, I am especially inspired by its focus on human connection, emotional well-being, and daily practices that help us become more self-aware and feel better from the inside out. PUUR’s approach to co-regulation reinforces something I’ve learned throughout my own journey: we were never designed to navigate transformation completely alone. Connection matters. Being seen, heard, supported, and able to authentically share what we’re experiencing can change how we move through life. These experiences have shaped the work I do today—helping people reconnect with themselves, recognize the meaning inside their defining moments, and turn the twists in their lives into something that can serve a greater purpose.

Your Story Could Be the Missing Piece

If you’ve been struggling to differentiate yourself, attract the right clients, explain what makes your approach different, or communicate your deeper mission, the answer may not be another marketing strategy.

You may need to go back to your story.

Because somewhere inside your journey are the experiences that shaped the leader you are today.

There may be a lesson you learned the hard way.

A transformation you experienced.

A challenge you overcame.

A belief you developed.

A moment when everything changed.

And somewhere in that story may be the message your audience needs to hear.

Your Story Doesn’t Have to Stay in Your Past

Your story isn’t just about where you’ve been.

It’s about what you’ve learned—and what you’re now able to help others achieve because of it.

That’s where your story becomes leadership.

That’s where your experience becomes intellectual property.

That’s where your personal journey can become a message that creates impact.

And that’s where Story to Spine™ comes in.

Turn Your Story Into a Mission-Led Message

Story to Spine™ is designed for coaches, consultants, transformational leaders, and experts who know they have a powerful story but need help turning that story into something bigger.

Instead of staring at a blank page and wondering where to begin, the process helps uncover the experiences, lessons, beliefs, and moments that can become the foundation of a Mission-Led Book and Keynote.

Your story isn’t just something to remember.

It can become something to build from.

A book.

A keynote.

A signature message.

A stronger leadership platform.

A deeper connection with your audience.

And ultimately, a clearer expression of the mission you’re here to fulfill.

Your Audience Is Waiting to Understand Why You

Your clients don’t just want another expert.

They want someone they can trust.

Someone who understands their challenges.

Someone with perspective.

Someone with a reason for doing this work.

Someone whose message makes them stop and think:

“This person understands me.”

Your story can create that moment.

So don’t ask only:

“What do I know?”

Ask:

“What have I lived that taught me what I now know?”

That answer may be the beginning of your most powerful leadership message.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is a leadership story important for attracting clients?

Your leadership story helps potential clients understand more than what you do—it helps them understand why you do it. A meaningful story can build trust, create connection, and help you stand out in a crowded marketplace.

What should a leadership story include?

A strong leadership story can include the experiences, challenges, turning points, lessons, beliefs, and transformations that shaped who you are today. The goal isn’t to share your entire life story, but to uncover the experiences that connect to your mission and the people you serve.

Do I need to have an extraordinary life story?

No. You don’t need a dramatic story to have a powerful leadership message. Everyday experiences, career transitions, failures, breakthroughs, and personal transformations can contain valuable lessons for your audience.

How can I turn my personal story into a business message?

Start by identifying the experiences that changed your perspective and connecting those lessons to the problem you now help others solve. Your story can then become the foundation for your content, keynote, book, signature message, or coaching business.

Should I share my personal story with potential clients?

You don’t need to share everything. The most effective leadership stories are intentional. Share the experiences that help your audience understand your perspective, build trust, and see how your experience connects to the transformation you provide.

Can my story help me become a better thought leader?

Yes. Your experiences can provide the foundation for original ideas, frameworks, and perspectives. When you connect your lived experience with your expertise, you can develop a message that feels authentic and is difficult for others to duplicate.

How do I know which parts of my story are important?

Look for the moments that changed you. Consider the challenges you overcame, lessons you learned, beliefs you developed, and experiences that influenced the work you do today. These moments can reveal the deeper message behind your mission.
