Understanding Adjectives

As a writer, I understand the importance of having a robust vocabulary.

Adjectives are essential to any writer’s toolkit and help add depth and meaning to the spoken and written word.

They paint the picture assisting the reader and listener to understand, on a sensory level – how something smells, looks, tastes, and feels.

Adjectives help to reveal truths about the author and can demonstrate that author’s personality or set a mood/atmosphere with the author’s unique style.

During my career transition from an Assistant U.S. Attorney to a professional singer/actress and ultimately to Health Coach and CEO of Embrace Your Fitness, adjectives were essential in telling my story to audiences, colleagues, and clients.

Each adjective I use is vital in helping others understand my life choices and giving them texture, along with an optical lens into my journey of love and passion.

Each adjective aids me in expressing my heart and spirit to all I coach and the audiences I address.

Role of Adjectives

As stated, adjectives describe many things, from people and animals to places and things.

They convey various emotions and feelings, from joy and happiness to anger and frustration, while creating a sense of urgency or importance, making our writing more compelling and persuasive.

Still unconvinced, describe any event without using adjectives and experience how difficult that task will be and how bland your story will read.

See if you can convey that adjective-less story creating an immersive experience for the reader, making your writing memorable.

I use adjectives daily to illustrate my life stories, including a story that occurred during my tenure as an Assistant United States Attorney when I was part of a trial team taking on members from two organized crime families.

My Story

After a lengthy day of blistering cross-examination, I conducted against an alleged, extremely violent hitman, I returned to my desk only to be greeted with an urgent message to report to my supervisor’s office.

The urgency of that note bought feelings of unease as I slowly walked down the long hallway.

Fear encompassed almost every part of my body, and I was overwhelmed with dread.

Something wasn’t right, and I knew it. Three bleak faces greeted me as I opened my supervisor’s office door.

An FBI agent closed the door behind me, and my supervisor looked me in the eye with a hint of sadness and asked, “Where can you send your son?” At the time, I had a two-year-old son.

He added, “There has been a threat against your life.” Before I could even acknowledge the panic gripping me, an FBI agent asked me, “What is your blood type?” That was a question I had never been asked and hoped never to be asked again.

Overwhelm and Fear are two words that cannot begin to express the emotions I felt.

At that moment, all I knew was that my life changed.

My predictable daily schedule was about to be upended.

For the next year, I was under a death threat by two organized crime families, and the U.S. Marshals, the Swat Team, and the FBI were assigned to keep me safe.

If I could not use adjectives to describe what happened to me during my tenure as an Attorney, the listener of my story would not understand the depth of my experience nor begin to envision its impact on my life.

I used adjectives to assist in bringing my story to life.

The following Adjectives that start with ‘R’ will go a long way toward helping you describe a wide range of things and convey various emotions and feelings.

Let this list ignite your stories.
